Rocket Propulsion of Memphis
R.P.M.
Established December 1997
Purpose
Establish an effective and educated rocket motor design, construction, and test team in the Memphis area.
Design, build, and test new rocket-powered manned vehicles.
Promote the contributions of rocket power to manned flight and landspeed records.
Current Projects
Manned Rocket-Powered Canoe
Develop a low cost twin hybrid rocket motor propelled canoe for fun and sun.
The Test Stand
Build a test stand that will measure thrust, chamber pressure, and temperature of hybrid rocket motors. The test stand will be instrumental in experimenting with motor design and fuel formulations.
Southern Thunder
Develop a 750 pound thrust hybrid rocket motor that could be used in a manned rocket powered dragster or motorcycle.
R.P.M. Status Update for 1999
We have built a high-flow oxidizer tank to get better performance on our rocket-powered canoe.
Built and tested a small fight-weight engine (1.75 lbs) to be used in a rocket that will carry a video camera and UHF transmitter.
Near completion of a 750 lb boiler plate hybrid engine and oxidizer system, the ST-1A Southern Thunder.
Began construction on the rocket that will carry the video camera.
Sent a team member (Glen) to Huntsville to get experience handling LOX for future RPM projects.
Met Homer Hickam at a book signing and offered him a free ride in the rocket powered canoe (he declined.)
